Oblate
Community

Oblates of St. Benedict are men
and women seeking God in their way of life and striving to strengthen
their commitment in response to God's love for them. As they grow in
their understanding of Missionary Benedictine Spirituality, they bring
these values into the challenges of everyday life.
Oblates of the Missionary
Benedictine Sisters are committed Christians who associate themselves
with the community. In this relationship, the community supports them in
their search to know and love the Lord. Enriched by the Gospel, the
spirit of St. Benedict and this community bonding, oblates are
strengthened to respond to the Gospel more deeply and generously.
Who Can become an
Oblate?
To become an oblate
one must be 18 years of age or older. Persons who truly seek to deepen
their relationship with God and their commitment to bring about the Reign of
God may ask to be received as oblate candidates. This initiation period
lasts at least one year. During this time oblate candidates receive
instruction and encouragement.
The act of final oblation is made by those
who feel God is calling them to seek him in the manner of a Benedictine
oblate. Although the oblation (which means "offering") is made for life, it
is not a permanent commitment and can be either discontinued or transferred
to another convent or monastery.
Oblate Commitment
Oblates commit themselves:

to deepen themselves spiritually through regular Scripture reading,
frequent participation in the Eucharist and daily praying some part of the
Liturgy of the Hours.
to serve in some form of missionary work as they see appropriate for
themselves in their place in life.
to attend oblate meetings, regularly when possible, to gain insight into
the way of St. Benedict, and to encourage one another.
to support the community of Missionary Benedictine Sisters through their
prayers and association with them.
Our oblate community has been in existence since 1989. There are currently
over 80 oblates and candidates in the community. Sr. Celine Schock is the
director and Sr. Veronica Willaway is the assistant director. Oblates have
a monthly conference and meeting. Retreats and days of recollection are offered to the
oblates. Oblates contribute to their bimonthly newsletter. Enrollment
ceremonies generally take place in February and July.
